DEFINITION - A
community foundation is a tax-exempt public charity created by and
for the people in a local area. It enables people with philanthropic
interests to easily and effectively support the issues they care
about-immediately or through their will. Donors can establish a
charitable fund at the foundation by contributing a variety of
assets and may also recommend grants-in their name or anonymously-to
nonprofit groups they want to support. The Delaware Community
Foundation serves the entire state of Delaware.

MISSION - To
inspire and help people of all backgrounds and means create lasting
legacies to benefit the people of Delaware.

OVERVIEW - The
Delaware Community Foundation is a community endowment - a permanent
pool of money contributed by numerous local donors to benefit
charitable causes throughout the State of Delaware.

ROLES
- The Delaware Community Foundation carries out two primary roles in
the community: It manages and administers hundreds of charitable
funds according to the wishes of the donors or to meet specific
community needs. It invests the funds received from donors and
awards grants to humanitarian, educational and cultural
organizations throughout the state. In addition, the Foundation is
involved in the assessment of community needs and the development of
plans to meet these needs, often in conjunction with other community
organizations.

HISTORY - The
Delaware Community Foundation was established when
community leaders realized the need for a permanent source of
funding to provide for Delaware's current and future needs. Pierre
S. duPont III and United Way of Delaware were among the individuals
and organizations that helped launch the DCF.

DONORS -
Individuals, families, businesses and organizations that care about
Delaware's quality of life - now and in the future -are making a
difference by establishing charitable funds at the DCF or supporting
the operations of the Foundation.

FUNDS - The
Foundation has more than 500 funds under its management.
|
 |
GRANTS - As the
funds grow over time, grants are awarded to support local nonprofit
organizations, in accordance with the interests of the donors or
specific community needs.

ASSETS -
Approximately $230 million as of June 30, 2006.
|
 |
VOLUNTEERS - More than 50 individuals donate their time and expertise to serve on
the Board of Directors and/or the committees of the Board.
|
 |
STAFF - The
eleven staff members at our main
office and two in our Georgetown office are professionals who understand our community's needs
and work to meet the needs of both grantees and
donors.
