Violence Prevention Programs

Since its inception, the DCF has focused a large part of its program grantmaking resources on disadvantaged populations and communities.

FY 90 - HOMELESSNESS
A total of $60,300 was awarded for 6 programs addressing homelessness, particularly as it affected children.

FY 91 - ADOLESCENTS
Nine programs dealing with adolescent populations received a total of $71,000 in grants.

FY 92 - HEALTH CARE SERVICES
A grant of $75,000 was awarded to Westside Health Service, to support this underfunded, but very important community-based health center. The DCF's belief is that access to health care - both preventive and critical care - is an absolute requirement of a sound society. The grant enabled the Westside Health Service to acquire additional space, permitting more comprehensive services including access to specialists such as podiatrists, ophthalmologists and neonatologists.

FY 93 - ARTS AND NONPROFITS
Delaware Arts Stabilization Fund - $50,000. To provide seed-money to initiate a program to promote the long-term financial stability of Delaware's cultural arts community. It was a joint venture among Delaware's business, civic, government, foundation and community leaders in support of the arts. ($21.5 million effort)

Delaware Community Foundation - $50,000. To employ a Director of Development and Deferred Giving. This grant was matched one for-one by the DCF Board of Directors to continue the position in 1994. A community wide planned and deferred-giving program was being planned.

FY 94 - HOUSING (also funded by Ford and MacArthur Foundations)
Delaware Building Capacity Program - $100,000. On November 19, 1993, Governor Thomas R. Carper announced the establishment of a statewide housing capacity program. This program was a joint venture undertaken by the Delaware State Housing Authority, the University of Delaware and the DCF. Its purpose was to provide information and training, as well as technical and financial assistance to local housing-related organizations.
