DCF 2002 AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM GRANT RECIPIENTS

Boys & Girls Club - Georgetown (Sussex County) $6,500
The Power in Communication program provides English as a Second Language instruction for Hispanic youth ages 6–12. The grant will enable trained ESL instructors to travel to Sussex County Boys & Girls Club sites to present this program.

Casa San Francisco/Catholic Charities, Inc. (Sussex County)* $3,000
This program serves 24 children ages 6–10, most of whom are low-income or minority, at a Milton elementary school. It includes supervised homework time and academic enrichment to help each child pass to the next grade. The grant provides funding for staff and program expenses.

City of Harrington Youth Center (Kent County)* $5,000
The center provides academic and recreational activities for children ages 6-16 who attend Lake Forest District schools in order to break the cycle of drugs and violence. The grant will help increase the hours of operation of the after school and summer programs.

Debnam House, a Community Center of the Cathedral of St. John (New Castle County)* $7,500
This program provides mentoring and enrichment for 5–12 year olds in the Brandywine Village area of Wilmington. The grant will help fund training programs for adult and high school age mentors and expand the variety of leadership development activities offered.

Delaware Association for Children of Alcoholics (New Castle County) $5,000
DACOA addresses the special needs of children of alcoholics of all ages. The grant will permit DACOA to expand its program to after school hours in collaboration with Girls, Inc.

Delaware Cooperative Extension (New Castle County) $15,000
The “Power-Up” program helps students in the Brookmont Farms neighborhood build skills in reading, math and computer literacy. The grant will enable the Delaware Cooperative Extension to fully staff the computer lab.

Dover Educational and Community Center (Kent County)* $10,000
The program offers activities to 80 children ages 5-12, in collaboration with the Capital School District, in a safe, nurturing environment in order to reduce aggressive and violent behavior. The grant will help expand program offerings, increase needed supplies and assist staff in working with parents to achieve a quality program.

East Side Charter School (New Castle County)* $9,000
The after school program provides a safe and nurturing environment that offers tutoring, recreation, conflict resolution, mentoring and academic enrichment services. The grant will assist in funding after school personnel.

Edgemoor Community Center (New Castle County) $5,000
ECC provides a structured after school program for children ages 6-12 which includes homework time, computer lab, the Delaware Prevention Network program and recreational activities. The grant will be used to support the costs of monthly community activities that promote family and personal development.

First State Community Action Agency – KidsUSA (Sussex County)* $5,000
KidsUSA is a program that exposes youngsters ages 13–15, at high risk for drug and/or alcohol abuse, to character and citizenship training and life planning. First State collaborates with the Cape Henlopen and Indian River School Districts to carry out these programs. The grant will fund implementation of the KidsUSA curriculum at the community center in West Rehoboth.

House of Pride (Kent County) $20,000
This after school program, located in Dover, provides education, recreation and support to children ages 5-15 and their families. The grant will help provide funding for staff and materials.

Jefferson Street Child Care Center, Inc. (New Castle County) $5,000
JSCC’s after school program serves children in grades 1-3 that attend Warner or Shortlidge Elementary schools in the City of Wilmington. The grant provides funding for personnel and activity expenses.

Jewish Family Service of Delaware (New Castle County)* $15,000
The Academic Achievement and Personal Enrichment Program (AP Program), located in three community centers, serves 410 youth ages 9–14 who have demonstrated difficulty in their home, school and community center environments. It is a prevention program that promotes educational and individual success and increases the students’ connection and commitment to these environments before they reach high school. The grant will provide funding for a clinical social worker.

Kingswood Community Center (New Castle County) $15,000
This program serves children ages 6-13 in Northeast Wilmington. The goals of the program are to provide a safe, productive learning environment where children will be assisted by qualified staff to reach their fullest academic and social potential. The grant will assist in funding additional support services and two staff members.

Kuumba Academy – Christina Cultural Arts Center (New Castle County) $8,000
The Sunset After Care program is a new community/school collaboration between Christina Cultural Arts Center and Kuumba Academy Charter School. Students in grades K-6 from Kuumba Academy, St. Peter’s School and Bancroft Elementary School are participating. This grant will fund guest artists in residence and technology specialists who will provide arts education and academic enrichment to the children.

New Knollwood Civic Association (New Castle County)* $10,000
This program is providing 20-25 children, ages 5-17, living in the low-income neighborhood of Knollwood in Claymont, with reading enrichment, tutoring and computer skills, while creating an environment that enables them to learn character formation skills. The grant provides funding for personnel and all program expenses.

People’s Place II (Kent and Sussex Counties)* $5,000
The Positive Alternatives to Substance Abuse (PASA) program provides 50 Milford School District children ages 8-15 with homework assistance, skill building as it relates to the prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, participation in recreational activity, and family support activities. The grant will help fund the operation of the program at both schools.

St. Paul AME Church (Kent County)* $6,000
This program is for Lake Forest School District children, ages 8–11, who will benefit from homework assistance, tutoring, counseling and recreational activities that develop mind and body in an atmosphere of learning that is free from drugs and violence. The grant will help provide funding for staff and materials.

West End Neighborhood House, Inc. (New Castle County) $5,000
This after school program serves 40 children, ages 6-12, who reside primarily in the City of Wilmington. Goals of the program include providing a safe environment, encouraging and rewarding academic success and connecting families with the community. The grant will fund field trips, guest speakers and program materials.

Whatcoat Social Services Agency (Kent County) $15,000
This program serves homeless children, living in two Dover-area shelters. Educational, cultural and recreational activities are provided to the children, who would not otherwise have access to an after school program. This grant will assist in expanding operation of the program from 6 months to 10 months of the year, and in purchasing educational and cultural materials.

Whatcoat United Methodist Church (Kent County) 15,000
The church, in collaboration with the Capital School District, is expanding its current after school program to six community-based sites in the Greater Dover area. More than 120 children, ages 5-12, will benefit from the creation of a positive working relationship between school, home and community. The grant will fund professional and volunteer training as well as program materials.

YMCA Resource Center (New Castle County) $10,000
The Positive After School Solutions (PASS) program provides Life Skills and Peer Leader training at the Walnut Street YMCA to children in grades 4-6 who attend nearby elementary schools. This grant will fund the personnel necessary to expand the training (currently offered on a limited basis) and assist in the purchase of materials.
