Forum On Out of School Time Issues

The Delaware Community Foundation presented this forum March 30, 2001 as part of its three-year grantmaking program for after school programs in collaboration with The Family & Workplace Connection. The forum was held to make policy makers aware of the needs of Delaware’s children in their out of school time.

A grant from the Coalition of Community Foundations for Youth provided the funding for the forum and also supported the Seventh Annual School-Age Care Conference, “Building Community: One Child at a Time” on March 31, 2001 (sponsored by The Family & Workplace Connection).

Judy Y. Samelson, communications consultant for the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, was the featured speaker at the March 30 forum., which was hosted by Senator Thomas R. Carper. Ms. Samelson leads the Mott Foundation's national awareness campaign on afterschool, which has included the creation of the After School Alliance, a unique public-private partnership initiative aimed at raising public awareness about this important issue.

The forum also included a panel discussion among community leaders regarding after school issues. Members of the panel included:

  • Guy H. Sapp, Director of Special Court Services for the Family Court of Delaware

  • State Senator David P. Sokola

  • Susan Davis, Community Education Director, National School-Age Care Alliance Member

  • Sara Toner, a high school student who represented the DCF's Youth Philanthropy Board.
