Planning a “Smart” Gift to Charity
(Original article appeared in Spring 2000 DCF newsletter – it

Everyone likes to give good advice. It's satisfying
to be able to tell a friend about a better way to do something. And
it's even more rewarding when your advice benefits the entire
community. A few years ago, Warren L. Allen Sr. offered some advice
to his friend Paula Hust that helped her make a "smart" charitable
gift. The gift benefits her now and will eventually help the people
of Delaware.
Ms. Hust (who is now Mrs. Allen) made her gift by
executing a charitable gift annuity agreement with the Delaware
Community Foundation. She transferred assets to the Foundation, and
in return, is receiving guaranteed annual income for life.
Ultimately, the gift will be added to the Warren L. Allen Family
Fund, a donor advised fund at the DCF.
“When Warren suggested the gift annuity to me, it
made a lot of sense. It met my charitable goals and it was easy,”
said Ms. Hust. “I was happy to make a gift that is good for both the
Foundation and me.”
Warren Allen, a longtime benefactor of the Delaware
Community Foundation and other charitable organizations in Delaware,
based his advice to Ms. Hust on his own practices. In addition to
creating the Warren L. Allen Family Fund, he has established a
number of gift annuities at the Foundation. “You know, the IRS is a
great motivator when it comes to charitable giving,” said Mr. Allen,
who, in his retirement, enjoys exploring ways to make his charitable
dollars go further.
Helping donors “give better” to enrich the lives of
present-day and future Delawareans is part of Delaware Community
Foundation's mission. With a wide range of fund arrangements, as
well as planned giving strategies, the DCF helps donors strengthen
and enrich their communities. The gifts made by Paula Hust and
Warren Allen are outstanding examples of what caring people can do
when they are provided with complete information from the DCF – and
perhaps some good advice from a friend. We appreciate their
thoughtfulness.
