Josephine
Clapp Osbun Fund
Josephine Clapp Osbun lives with her dog, Awesome, an
Australian Heeler, in the beautiful home she and her husband Ben
built in 1959 for their young family. The warmth of the family room
fireplace reflects the warm memories the room holds for Josephine,
as she talks about her family and their recent reunion, and shows
off the scooter her grandchildren gave her.
Josephine loves her home and the Greater Wilmington
community she has called home for more than 40 years, the past 20 as
a widow. She enjoys being involved in community service, devoting
her time to Christ Church, Friends of Winterthur, Colonial Dames and
Women in the Military Service for America (WIMSA). Josephine’s
interest in WIMSA stems from her World War II service as a Second
Lieutenant with the US Public Health Service (after graduating as a
pre-med student from Smith College).
Josephine’s community involvement includes a
charitable fund at the DCF. The Foundation’s positive reputation led
her to create the Josephine Clapp Osbun Fund in 1991. This deferred fund
will receive the remainder of Josephine’s Charitable Remainder Trust
upon her death. The trust, which Josephine established with
appreciated stock, provides her with income for life and will
benefit her favorite charities in the future. “It’s a win-win
situation,” she said.
When Josephine established her fund, she prepared a
list of organizations that would receive annual funding after her
death. The fund’s flexibility gives her the option of changing the
beneficiaries as her interests change, and Josephine meets annually
with the DCF’s Collis Townsend to review the fund agreement and seek
his advice about beneficiaries. Josephine also involves her four
children in her charitable decisions.
Through her fund at the DCF Josephine Clapp Osbun is
sustaining her care for the community and her philanthropic
intentions for future generations of Delawareans.
