J ohn J. Ryan Scholarship Fund
Dr. Rita Ryan felt a great deal of pride as she
watched Geoffrey Rockland “Rocky” Myers accept the John J. Ryan
Scholarship from Collis Townsend at Caesar Rodney High School in May
2000.
Both Rita and John Ryan began their careers as
educators at this Kent County high school in the 1950s. Dr. John
Ryan went on to become the first principal at the Dover Air Force
Base High School, then began 25 years of service with the Delaware
Department of Public Instruction in 1966. He held many
administrative roles, retiring as Deputy Superintendent in 1990.
The family of John Ryan created the John J. Ryan
Scholarship Fund at the DCF in 1998 to honor the memory of this
life-long educator, who died in 1993. The scholarship provides
financial assistance to promising graduates of Caesar Rodney High
School who aspire to a career in education or teaching. Rocky Myers
is the third recipient of the scholarship.
“I think this scholarship is what John would have
wanted, and I know it’s what I want,” said Rita Ryan, whose current
involvement in education is through testing students at Polytech
High School. “We both started at Caesar Rodney and we were both in
education, so it’s fitting to award the scholarship to a Caesar
Rodney student who values education as a career.”
