The Next Generation

Background

The Delaware Community Foundation (DCF) has a long-standing tradition of encouraging and enabling young adults to participate in their local communities throughout the state.  That tradition has been embraced and advanced by the DCF's current President and CEO Fred Sears.  Since joining the DCF, Fred has sought new ways to engage young professionals and harness their energy and enthusiasm to help advance the many causes and organizations the DCF supports.  This infusion of young and motivated individuals is not only helping to effect change today but is also building a foundation for the future; these young adults are the next generation of community leaders.

 What is The Next Generation?

The Next Generation (TNG) is a philanthropic organization that was created and is managed by young professionals living and working in Delaware.  While TNG leverages many of the DCF’s resources, it is a separate entity.  There are about 35 members of TNG who have chosen to dedicate their time and resources to helping to find ways to give back to our community.  TNG's initial philanthropic focus is on funding initiatives dedicated to helping lower Delaware’s infant mortality rate.

 Goals of The Next Generation

  • Provide grant money to fight the high incident rate of infant mortality in Delaware

  • Recruit and encourage young professionals to participate in our community

  • Develop effective leaders for future philanthropic and non-profit causes

"The Next Generation gives a younger generation the opportunity to experience first-hand the nuances of establishing and managing philanthropy, and the grant-making process will introduce members to many organizations formerly unknown to them."    Roger Kirtley, Chairman, TNG Development Committee.

New Grantmaking Focus for The Next Generation

Grants will be awarded in January 2008 to out-of-school support programs for 10 - 14 year olds that address the challenges faced by Delaware youth including, but not limited to, underlying social factors that contribute to low graduation rates, teen pregnancy, juvenile crime, and drug abuse. The program must incorporate mentoring by, but not limited to, family members, role models, or peers. However, TNG Youth Support Grant need not be utilized solely for the mentoring component.  The deadline for applications has passed.
