We all enjoy a better quality of life when all people have opportunities to succeed. However, there is much evidence showing us that for far too many people, the American Dream is just that — a dream.
At the DCF, we believe in the American Dream. We also know that it has never been fully available to everybody.
But it’s always been worth reaching for.
Therefore, the DCF is leading a multiyear initiative to explore the opportunity gap, convene conversations that lead to solutions, and leverage resources for the greatest impact on creating opportunity for all Delawareans.
In the fall of 2018, we launched Building Opportunity in Delaware to increase the impact of philanthropy on the most critical issues in our state. Through this work, we strive to foster discussion and collaboration that will empower our community to reduce the opportunity gap. See the sidebar for information about how to get involved.
What is the opportunity gap?
The opportunity gap refers to the ways in which institutional barriers in our society – educational, economic, and racial – contribute to growing disparities among classes in America and perpetuate lower educational aspirations and economic success for some citizens.
What issues will be in focus?
We believe that philanthropy is an important part of solving big challenges. In particular, we believe that the DCF can provide valuable civic leadership in three areas:
- The success of Delaware’s youth
- A thriving Latino population
- Equitable communities
