The 2019 Our Lens Challenge has closed! We’ll be sharing the winning images and more information soon!
Capture and submit a photograph that represents what makes your town or community unique or beautiful. In the spirit of James and Deborah Fallows’ journey across America, and leading up to their visit to Delaware in November for our Building Opportunity Keynote, the Our Lens Challenge is inspiring young people statewide to share the pride, spirit and story of Delaware.
The DCF is supporting the Our Lens Challenge in partnership with Dual School, 4 Youth Productions and University of Delaware’s Human Development and Family Sciences Department, Horn Entrepreneurship, and the Partnership for Arts and Culture.
The Bigger Picture
Submissions will become a part of a statewide photojournal showcasing what young Delawareans find inspiring about their towns.
Up to five top contributors will have the opportunity to meet bestselling authors, James and Deborah Fallows, authors of Our Towns: A 100,000 Mile Journey into the Heart of America. These students will each receive a $100 Amazon gift card and be honored at the Nov. 6 Building Opportunity Keynote event, where their work will be featured.
Learn more about the project, how to get started, and even basics on taking a great photo through the series of YouTube videos, linked below. To enter the challenge, submit:
- A photograph highlighting a bright spot in your community.
- A title (5 words or less)
- A reflection about the entry (100 words or less)
Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate, including public, private, diocesan and homeschool students.
Only photos, captions, and reflections created by the high school student submitting to the Our Lens Challenge can be accepted. In situations where other, non-participants also played a significant role in creating or developing the photos, the submitting high schooler or high school team is expected to have gained non-participants’ consent to submit the concept and disclose their names during the registration process.
The Our Lens Challenge includes open and public presentations and an external review of submissions. Participation is voluntary, and as such, participants are responsible for determining whether to disclose personal, proprietary or sensitive information in their photo, caption, and reflection submissions. The University of Delaware, Dual School, Delaware Community Foundation, FourYouth Productions, and all other partnering organizations assume no liability for accidental or voluntary disclosures of proprietary information or intellectual property. The Our Lens Challenge Team, its partner organizations, and any event hosts have the right to post, print and publicly distribute the original photos taken by students and to take photos of any students and supporters who choose to attend Our Lens Challenge related events, including, but not limited to, the DCF-sponsored Building Opportunity Keynote event on Nov. 6, 2019.
