Chowdown for CharityThe southern chapter of The Next Generation (Next Gen South) of the Delaware Community Foundation raised more than $10,000 at its fourth annual Chowdown for Charity on Feb. 5 at Baywood Greens in Long Neck.

In the friendly culinary competition, Bethany Blues’ Carolina-style pork taco with homemade apple slaw was named “Chowdown Champion 2016,” beating out signature dishes from competitors Catch 54, Baywood Greens, Nage Bistro and Wine Bar, Crooked Hammock, The Brick Hotel on the Circle, The Rookery, Henlopen City Oyster House, and Salt Air.

The funds raised will support grants for local nonprofit organizations providing mental health services for children in Kent and Sussex County. Since inception, Next Gen South has awarded $42,500 in grants, including last year’s awards of $10,000 to La Esperanza and $5,000 to Delaware Guidance Services.

“The DCF is focused on the long-term good of our community, so it’s important to cultivate these emerging philanthropists and nonprofit leaders,” DCF President and CEO Stuart Comstock-Gay said. “Chowdown for Charity is just one of the Next Gen activities that makes me confident that Delaware’s future is in good hands.”
